PAINTING AND PRINT FAQs

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
I hope you find the answer to your question here! If not, please email me at contactme@hayleystokesart.com or message me under the CONTACT menu at the top of the page.

Paintings

What medium are your original paintings?
I work mainly in water based mediums; acrylic paint, watercolours, charcoal, pastel and pencils. Further details will usually be listed alongside each piece.

Are your paintings framed?
It varies. Most work on canvas is sold unframed; many people prefer this more modern look and it means it can be shipped without costing you more. If you like the look of a frame you can choose when you have the painting with you – it’s easier to decide that way! A slimline box frame looks great on a canvas.

Paintings on cradled wood usually have a contemporary handpainted wooden frame. Details will be with each work. Please contact me if you would like bespoke advice or have any further questions – framing can be an art in itself!

Will my painting be ready to hang?
Yes, all paintings will come ready to hang. (with cord, wire or hanging straps) You just need to decide where!

Purchasing with a deposit
As the value of my work grows I understand spreading the cost can be a helpful option. Please contact me to arrange. You can hold the painting with a 50% deposit. The balance can be paid in one further payments or 2 monthly payments of 25% each. This is an informal agreement made with trust; you understand that a deposit will secure your artwork and you will be required to pay the remaining balance.

This is not a credit scheme, but an arrangement on trust, at no extra cost to you. Usual shipping costs and return policy will apply.

Can I purchase your work with a different payment plan?
Yes, that can be arranged. For any work over £600 you can pay in instalments. Please send me a message and we can work out an arrangement that suits you. As soon as the final payment is made, your work will be shipped to you.

My favourite painting has sold – how can I be sure to know about new work?
Some pieces sell very quickly. Make sure you join my mailing list to find out about new work before it is added to the Shop. But, as I try not to bombard you with emails, you can also follow studio progress on Instagram or Facebook to see work coming up.

How will my painting be wrapped?
It depends on size, but paintings will be carefully packed using corner protection, bubble wrap and cardboard. Each one is unique so I take care that is well protected to arrive in perfect condition. For further details about delivery please see the Shipping details.

Do you do special commissions?
Currently I’m not taking on any new commissions, as I’m working on a new body of work. If you like my style then one of those may be the one for you!

EDITIONS FAQs

What is an edition?
An edition is a high quality reproduction of an original artwork, the print is so fine you can’t see the printed dots with the naked eye. All editions are signed by me on the front.

How are the editions made?
A high resolution photograph of the original work is taken and carefully colour adjusted to ensure the optimum colour match. The editions are giclee prints made at a specialist printer using archival quality inks on a 100% cotton rag acid free paper.

Why do you use the word ‘edition’ when so many artists call them prints?
Because I also do ‘proper’ fine art printmaking using traditional techniques such as drypoint and etching so I thought using the word print could get confusing!

Do you make editions of all your paintings?
No, most are available as originals only. Certain paintings which I feel would work particularly well as reproductions are selected to be available as editions.

Can I order an edition at a different size?
Most editions have some sizing options so you can choose what suits you, although not all are available at the largest size. Remember once you have added a mount and a frame the final dimensions will be larger.

Will my edition be framed?
Because of the difficulty of shipping glass I don’t usually sell framed work. If you are happy to collect from my studio in Chiswick I can arrange framing for you. Please email me at alice@alicesheridan.com or add a message to your order. You could also look at eframe for ordering mounts and frames online.

How will my edition be wrapped?
Pieces under 20 x 30 cm will be carefully packed flat. Larger artwork will be rolled and sent in an extra strong cardboard tube to make sure it reaches you in best condition. For further details about delivery please see the Shipping details.

ARTY PARTY FAQs

Do I have to be able to draw or paint already?

Not at all! You will be guided through each step and given as much help as you need. It's a fun opportunity to give something a go that you've never tried before. And you may well surprise yourself...!

So will I be bored if I can already paint?

Definitely not! Hayley will be responsive to each person's level of ability. There is no requirement to stick to the steps and design covered in the session. You can put your own spin on the task, or do your own thing entirely! If nothing else, the event will provide the time, space, equipment and atmosphere to allow you to be your creative self with no other demands.

Do people drink alcohol at the events?

The events at The New Inn are in a pub so there is easy access to a licensed bar and people are welcome to go for hot, cold, soft and alcoholic drinks and bring them back to the party room at their leisure.

What is the light buffet?

At the New Inn, the landlady Linda provides a wonderful spread of breads, pates, meats, salads, dips, breads, crackers, crisps etc. It is a little different every time depending on what f Linda has available at the time but we always check any dietary requirements and tailor it to those.

Do you provide food at private events?

Any events arranged at The New Inn will include the light buffet if wanted. Hayley does not provide food for events organised elsewhere but this can be arranged directly with the hosting venue if desired.

Are children welcome at private parties?

At private events, it is up to the host to decide whether they wish to include children. In my experience, children aged 10 and over are generally able to participate and enjoy the event. Younger children are likely to need a lot of support that would need to be provided by their parent/carer otherwise it would distract from the instruction Hayley is able to give to the rest of the party guests. Just bear in mind that a parent managing a child would not have the same opportunity to work on their own canvas. I am happy to discuss this with customers during the organisation of the event.

Are children welcome at the pre-arranged New Inn events?

Answer: At the New Inn, mature children aged ten and above are usually welcome unless a group of adults have purchased tickets and have expressed a preference for it to be adult only. Please let me know when buying a ticket if it is intended for a child so we can ensure it is workable.

Do you do children's parties?

Answer: This is something I would definitely be happy to discuss. I often work in schools and have DBS clearance and am happy to look at your requirements to see if we can plan something that would work for your child

What is the maximum number of guests?

Answer: I don't tend exceed 8-10 people at my parties at the New Inn. If you were organising a bigger event, I would ask an additional artist to assist me for every ten additional guests.

What equipment is provided?

Answer: I provide tables easels, paints, brushes (and other mark making tools), mixing pallets, water, cloths, aprons, table coverings, canvases, templates and instruction sheets where needed.
